Description

The Trewythen Arms Hotel is a symmetrical, three-storey building with a five-window red brick front and a plinth. It features a hipped slate roof with slightly swept eaves and a cornice with modillion brackets, along with blue brick chimney stacks. The small pane sash windows have brick voussoirs, with six panes on the second floor and twelve panes below. The hotel name is prominently displayed on the second floor, with flags at the first floor.

A broad timber porch supported by paired Greek Doric columns is topped with a cornice that includes full classical details, such as metopes made of cameo-like roundels and a central lamp bracket. The entrance has half-glazed doors within a round arched opening, featuring a panelled soffit and an elegant fanlight. The first two bays on the left side are from an earlier period, while the later cross range beyond has two and three windows made of painted brick, sharing similar details like the bracket cornice. Some windows are horned and lack glazing bars, and an extra ground floor window has been added, along with a modern door at the extreme left end. The rear is slate hung with bracket eaves, and there is a modern extension on the inner side of the cross range and on the gable end, while the original stairwell projection remains at the back of the main range. A low modern range at the rear is not included in the listing.

Inside, the hotel retains significant Georgian classical details. The entrance hall features an oval ceiling rose and a cornice with modillions and rosettes. The dog leg staircase has a swept-up handrail, a turned newel, and fluted balusters, with arched openings at the landing that are now partly blocked. There are six-panel doors with six-panel reveals and dado rails. The dining room boasts a fine cornice decorated with bukrania and cameo-like profile figures, as well as a marble fireplace. Many ceiling roses can be found on the upper floors, and there is a dentil cornice on the first floor landing.
