Description
The stable and laundry ranges date to the late 18th or early 19th century and display group value. The main range is faced with a rendered finish, and has a shallow slate roof extending beyond the walls on deeply projecting moulded brackets. Brickwork is visible on the end walls, and there are axial chimney stacks. The building is two storeys high, with a five-window facade, and a central, two-storey porch. The lower section of the porch is largely glazed, with a shallow arch forming the entrance, flanked by three subsidiary arches forming a glazed doorway and side lights, all featuring Greek key motifs on the pilasters. Similar arches are above the windows on each side. A two-light window with lattice glazing sits above the door, framed by a double reeded architrave, console brackets, and an entablature hood. A heavy cornice with moulded brackets, echoing the main eaves line, supports a pediment, and scalloped barge boards add to the ornamentation. Late 19th century four-pane sash windows are found on the ground floor, with smaller eight-pane sashes above; a metal window was inserted to the first floor around 1950. The parallel rear range features mullioned and transomed iron-framed windows with small panes on both floors, and two side wall stacks.
The main range is connected by a brick wall with flat stone copings to a stable range to the right and a former laundry to the left. These are both brick buildings with their gable ends facing outwards, blind except for lunettes at their apexes. Lean-to extensions containing doorways and flanking windows project towards the main house.
Inside, the entrance and stair hall are centrally located, with principal rooms opening off to either side and service rooms in the parallel rear range. The entrance hall features a heavy plaster cornice and reeded doorcases with rosettes at the angles. A steep, curved staircase has a swept rail and moulded tread ends. The dining room has a plain marble fireplace and a plaster cornice with a Grecian key motif. The drawing room also features a plain marble fireplace and a deep plaster cornice decorated with anthemia and trailed wheatears. The roof space reveals three distinct phases of building and remodelling in the trusses. Two original trusses remain, featuring king and queen posts with raking struts above the collar; an arched doorway is cut through the western truss. Decorative framing, including cruciform timbers with chevron bracing, is visible in the western gable.
