Description

The Factory is a Grade II listed building constructed from roughly coursed rubble with brick dressings around the windows. The roof was largely missing during an inspection in 1995, but it likely originally had slate, which was later replaced with corrugated sheet. There is a stack on the right-hand gable. The main range is three storeys high and consists of five bays, divided internally to create a working area of four bays and a small separate area that has always been used for domestic purposes on the right. Each floor features wide windows with brick arched heads. There is a doorway leading into the working area to the right of the centre, and a smaller doorway leading to the domestic accommodation to the right, against the gable end. The rear elevation has a similar pattern of windows and a former doorway in the centre. A wheel pit was formerly located against the left-hand gable, and a round-arched opening for the shaft can still be seen below ground level, along with a doorway at first floor level. There is a small extension against the right-hand gable made of rougher rubble, which is a single unit with a doorway to the right and a single window beside it.

Internally, the building was originally divided into working areas of four bays on the ground and first floors, while the upper storey remains an undivided space. These working areas feature heavy transverse timber beams and chamfered kingpost and strut trusses typical of the 19th century. There are remnants of machinery against the gable wall, including a timber wallower wheel and a plank drum, which may have been part of a willy. The fifth bay on the right is separated by a brick wall on the ground floor and stud partitions (which have been recently replaced) on the first floor, and it comprises a small dwelling unit with axial ceiling beams and a gable end fireplace.
