Description
The retaining walls, gates, and piers at Broneirion are constructed from rock-faced ashlar greywacke, featuring limestone ashlar gatepiers that are positioned at right angles to a cast iron gate. These elements form the retaining wall for Broneirion Lodge and the entrance to the driveway leading to the house. The gatepiers date from around 1865 to 1870 and have re-entrant corners, with each side ending in a gable topped by a trefoil finial above a stiff-leaf enriched cavetto moulding. The piers rise to an angled finial adorned with an angled shield on each of their four faces. They also feature moulded arrises and a carved palmette band that includes the initials DD. The western pier is double and serves as the end of the curved retaining wall for the Lodge, which is topped with cast iron railings. The iron gates are designed with dog rails and a perforated top band, embellished with small crestings of acanthus leaves.
