Description
Lower Llanerchydol is a 17th-century building that features a main range facing southwest, with an offset wing to the northeast, which extends along the same axis as a shippon or other farm building. A later outshut occupies the angle between the wing and the main range to the northwest. The structure is primarily timber-framed, except for the outshut, which is constructed of local rubble. The roofs are covered with slate, and there is an axial brick stack on the main range, along with another brick stack marking the limit of the domestic section of the rear wing.
The building is box-framed in square panels, using heavy timbers with jowled corner posts. The infill consists of plaster (possibly over wattle and daub), brick, and rubble, all painted except for the northwest gable end, which has exposed brick infill. Part of the southeast gable end has been rebuilt or refaced in rubble, but the corner posts, collar, and raking struts of the roof truss remain visible. The roof truss in the northwest gable is of the king and queen strut type.
The main range features a doorway in the gable end, which has a six-panelled door with a segmentally arched brick head, flanked by a six-pane sash window. There is also a three-light casement window near the gable apex. The front elevation includes a single inserted casement window to the left and a gabled dormer window within the roof, which has a two-light small-paned casement. The rear elevation displays similar square panelled framing with exposed arch-bracing.
The rear wing contains a single unit of domestic accommodation adjoining the main range, featuring a tripartite sash window on the ground floor and a three-light casement window in a gabled dormer within the roof, along with arch-bracing within the timber frame. The farm building that continues the line of this wing is a later addition, also timber framed and of similar construction. It has divided doors at each end on the southeast elevation, a weatherboarded gable, and on the northwest elevation, there is an outshut with a single doorway and window. The roof of the outshut extends over the rear wall of the house, forming a porch for the back door.
