Description

Llwyn-Derw is a symmetrical, three-storey, five-window house built in the 18th century of stone, with a slate roof, rendered end stacks, and a dentilled eaves cornice. The front elevation is of coursed grey small stones, and features a simple Tuscan portico with a dentilled cornice. Within the portico is a panelled door, positioned beneath a fanlight with intersecting tracery, with panel detailing to the door reveals. The windows are hornless sashes with 6-over-6 panes, set within flat-arched stone voussoir heads.

The north side of the house is constructed of rubble stone. Beyond the gable end lies the north wall of a two-window rear wing. The attic has a two-light casement window with a flat-arched voussoir head, the one on the right featuring an iron openwork balcony. A tall 9-over-9-pane stairlight window is positioned on the middle storey to the left, alongside a tall casement to the right, also with a balcony. A late 20th-century glazed door with side lights is situated on the ground floor to the left. A small, late 20th-century flat-roofed brick lean-to was attached to the gable end (scheduled for demolition in 2000).

On the far right of the south end is a late 20th-century glazed door. Set back from this is a shallow, three-storey, three-window block built in 1982 in a neo-Georgian style. It has a rendered finish, a hipped slate-covered roof, a dentilled cornice, and hornless 6-over-6-pane sash windows. A tall window is centrally positioned in the attic storey with a balcony, and a canted bay with French doors is located on the lower left side. A small niche with a round head is found on the east side. A weather-boarded wing was added to the rear in 1975 with its front facing south.

Inside, glazed double doors with the original fanlight provide access to the entrance hall. Reception rooms are located to the left and right. A dog-leg wooden staircase with plain balusters leads to the rear on the left, situated under a wide archway with a wood-panelled soffit. To the right of the staircase is a doorway leading to a corridor at a right angle, at the end of which is a back staircase. Behind the staircase is the kitchen, which contains a large stone fireplace with a segmental stone head, likely dating to the 17th century, partially infilled at the base. To the right of the entrance hall, a partition wall has been partially removed and replaced with a wide segmental archway with panel detailing. This room has a ceiling cornice featuring a classical-style frieze and a fireplace with a flat head decorated with scrolls. Further panelled doors with flat heads are found throughout the house.
