Description

Moriah Chapel is a small single-storey chapel built in 1828 and rebuilt in 1867. It features a porch at the west end and a continuous outshut on the north side. The chapel is constructed of rubble stone with a slate roof, and the south side is rendered. The upper half of the west end is slate-hung, while the lower half is rendered. The small gabled porch has a planked door beneath a shouldered lintel that bears the inscription 'Moriah/Built 1828/Rebuilt 1867'.

The south side has two windows, both tripartite horned sashes with coloured margin glazing, set under flat heads. The east gable end also has two similar windows under shallow segmental heads made of stone voussoirs. To the right, leading into the stable outshut, is a boarded door with a similar head. The north side features a planked door to the right, located just under the eaves.

Inside, the chapel has a simple design with a three-bay roof and a canted boarded ceiling. There is a central bank of pews with carved bench ends and aisles on either side. At the east end, there is an octagonal wood panelled pulpit with blind trefoil-headed arches and open quatrefoils, accompanied by flanking stairs with turned balusters. It is noted that there was likely a gallery along the south side at one time.

A shaped marble tablet with a triangular head behind the pulpit commemorates Richard James, who served as minister for 49 years until his death in 1919. On the north wall, there is a simple marble tablet with a triangular head dedicated to Morgan Jenkins, a draper from Swansea who was born at Penybont Uchaf and lived from 1840 to 1921. This tablet was created by E L Davies of Llanwrtyd. The stable on the north side has not been entered.
