Description
Bridge 146 and Brynderwen Lock is a single span brick arched bridge that features a lock extending south from its abutments. The bridge includes a brick string course and a concrete deck. The northern parapet is made of red brick with sandstone coping, while the southern parapet is constructed of blue brick with concrete coping. The parapets curve around and end in piers, except on the northeast side. The straight brick abutments support splayed blue brick walls that extend low from the northern end and have slots for stop planks. The lock chamber, lined with blue brick and featuring sandstone copings, continues southward. It contains recesses for timber swing gates and stop gates, with cast iron-lined rebates. At the southern end, remnants of a cast iron rack and pinion-operated gearing mechanism are visible. Below this mechanism, a cast iron lined culvert extends away from the canal on both sides. An overflow culvert is located on the western side of the lock, with its face having been repaired in timber. Additionally, a simple timber access way has been built over the lock to the south of the southern parapet.
