Description
The Memorial Baptist Chapel is a Grade II listed building designed in the Free Lancet style of Gothic architecture. It features slate roofs, snecked bullnose masonry, and bathstone dressings, all set on a high shallow plinth.
The gabled entrance front faces roughly north and includes two gabled bays. At the northeast corner, there is a rectangular tower. The rear of the building contains a vestry with a tall octagonal chimney and a schoolroom. The tall gable front is flanked by stepped angle buttresses and has a small rectangular window in the apex, situated between bathstone bands. At the first floor level, there is a group of four large lancet windows in bathstone that light the gallery. Below this, a shallow gabled porch features a trefoil in the apex and an arched hood over the entrance doorway.
The east elevation showcases a rectangular tower with a steeply pitched hipped slate roof, supported by a bathstone cornice. Below this, there are stages with rectangular lights and louvred lancets. The lower stage is high with tall buttresses and windows at two levels that light the stairs in the tower. The doorway has a segmental head. To the left of the tower, there are two gabled bays, each buttressed and featuring a small rectangular window in the apex between bathstone bands. The first floor has three lancets, with three smaller lancets below. Adjacent to this is the vestry area at a lower level, which includes two square-headed windows and a tall octagonal chimney. Beyond the vestry, a school was added in 1929, constructed as a single storey with a deeply pitched slate roof and local rubble masonry. The roof includes glass skylights in the ridge and a metal ventilation louvre, along with a projecting gable featuring a three-light mullioned and transomed window.
Inside, the chapel is accessed via a lobby with a staircase leading up to the gallery within the tower. The body of the chapel has two high side bays on each side, adorned with gothic arches. These bays are supported by heavy corbels intended for unbuilt side galleries. The existing gallery over the lobby is supported by cast iron pillars and features a pierced wooden balustrade. The chapel has a high polygonal roof with a classical cornice. At the south end, a high arch encloses three arched bays, with the central bay housing the organ and a raised pulpit area that includes an immersion font. Doors lead to the vestries and the later schoolroom, which also boasts a high open timber roof.
