Description
The stable block at Cefndyrys is a grouping of buildings arranged around a central courtyard, likely dating from the 18th century. The east wing, facing the main house, is two storeys high and features three bays constructed of coursed freestone. It has a plat band, a hipped slate roof, end stone stacks, and a central octagonal wooden cupola topped with a pyramidal roof and weathervane. A projecting central gabled bay contains a keyed, segmental-headed entrance with boarded doors. Above the entrance, a window originally set under a flat arch has been removed for repair, and a clock face is in the gable. The outer bays feature flat arches and retain three-light windows with pointed lights and leaded glazing; the lower windows are taller and transomed, although some have been removed for repair. The north and south return elevations of the east wing have two-light casements in each storey, with an eight-pane horned sash window on the south side of the lower storey.
A passage runs through the north wing, immediately to the right of the east wing, and is covered by a wooden segmental head. An abutting garden wall is situated further to the right. The west side, which faces the walled garden, has two three-light windows with wooden mullions and transoms. A central outshut is also present, with a similar two-light window and a brick stack on its right side. The south elevation shows vertical joints indicating a former passage that has been infilled immediately to the left of the east wing.
Within the courtyard, the east wing is constructed of rubble stone with a three-light casement window on the upper left side. The centre is weatherboarded and incorporates a boarded door. The remaining courtyard elevations are timber-framed and weatherboarded. The north side has boarded doors leading to a coach house, alongside a fixed nine-pane window. The west wing has a split boarded door to a stable on the right and a boarded door to a tack room on the left, both with nine-pane overlights. The south wing has a boarded door with a three-pane overlight leading to a stable; to its left is a three-light window with wooden mullions and transoms, and further left are boarded doors inserted into the original passage.
The east wing likely originally housed grooms but was subsequently altered. It now contains a central narrow passage with a dog-leg staircase. The room to the right of the entrance was converted into a back kitchen serving the main house, featuring a fireplace with a cambered stone surround and an inserted brick bread oven. The room to the left of the entrance was later used as a smoking and billiard room, and has a ribbed entrance door, a panelled ceiling with moulded ribs and a stencilled foliage pattern, and a fireplace with a wooden mantelpiece. The west and south wings retain some of their original stalls.
