Description

Hen-efail is a two-unit cottage dating from the 18th century, oriented south-west to north-east, with a chimney located at the south-west gable end. The building features uncoursed quasi-rubble stone and a slate roof, although a third unit to the north-east has a slightly lower roof now covered in corrugated steel sheeting, with a few slates still visible. There is a lean-to calf-house on the right (north-east) with a corrugated roof, and a small stone-walled enclosure in front of it that lacks a gate.

On the front (south-east elevation), there is a baffle-entry doorway on the left and two windows with timber lintels. Above, there are two dormer windows with slate lean-to roofs and cheeks, aligned with the windows below. In the additional bay to the right, there is a small casement window and a door, both also featuring timber lintels.

At the rear, there is a slight projection for the bread oven beside the main chimney. The rear has one window, and there is another window in the apex of the north-east gable.

Inside, there is a large hearth at the south-west end with a baffle-entry to its left and a large bread oven built into the right side. The cottage has a timber-framed partition between the units and also between the house and the outer unit, which may have originally been a smithy.

The outer unit to the north-east recently lacked an upper floor, but it likely had one originally, as indicated by the presence of a loft window.
