Description

The John Hughes Memorial Chapel, also known as Pontrobert Chapel, is a Grade II* listed building featuring a cottage and chapel constructed from uncoursed, white-painted stonework topped with a slate roof. The structure has stone end chimneys and is oriented south-west to north-east, facing south-east towards the road.

The building has been restored to resemble its likely appearance before modifications in the late 19th century, which converted it into a wheelwright or carpenter's shop. The front of the cottage includes two windows, one above and one below, on the left side, with a door on the right. The chapel's front elevation is symmetrical, featuring a pair of large high-level windows flanked by entrances for men and women. All joinery has been restored, with the large windows designed as horizontally sliding sashes over fixed lights, all leaded. Similar windows are found at the rear.

The cottage has small modern timber windows on the rear and side. The chapel is accessed through symmetrically positioned doors, and the pulpit remains in what is believed to be its historic location at the center of the rear wall, situated on a low dais. However, none of the original pews or other chapel features are still present in the interior.

The partition between the chapel and cottage is timber framed, with the late date of 1800 indicated by the unusual use of Arabic numerals for carpenter's marks. At a high level, there is a hatch that John Hughes used in his old age for preaching from his bed. The chapel features a single king-post truss.

The adjacent cottage retains its original staircase and includes a chamfered and stopped beam on the first floor.
