Description

Bethel Chapel is a large building constructed with rock-faced snecked stone and topped with an old slate roof. The entrance facade faces north, away from the road, and is symmetrical, featuring a central pair of doors with a fanlight set within a shallow gabled porch. The building has two storeys with 8-paned sash windows, where the upper windows are round-headed and the lower ones are segmental, both with limestone heads and sills. A large central tablet displays the date of construction, and there is a painted zinc pyramidal roof vent located centrally on the ridge. At the rear, there is a single-storey vestry and a three-bay schoolroom with a hipped roof and 8-paned sashes, which is canted at the corner.

The forecourt is paved with blue stable bricks and features cast iron railings, made in 1896 by J.D. Davies of Machynlleth, mounted on a low slate coped wall.

Inside, there is a raked gallery around two sides with a panelled and balustraded front, supported by fluted Composite columns. The panelled pulpit has a classical panelled Ionic reredos and a half-round fan head. The chapel contains numbered pews and white marble wall tablets dedicated to William Howell and his wife, who died in 1854 and 1862, respectively.
