Description
Plasau duon is a timber-framed house, likely dating from the 17th century, with later alterations. The building features tension braced close studding to the ground floor, square framing above, and diagonal framing to the upper floor of the porch, all with whitened infill panels, and a slate roof. The house has two storeys, a cellar beneath the parlour, and an attic.
A raised porch, reached by four steps, has a depressed ogee open doorcase, turned side balusters and built-in side seats. Dragon beams support a jetty on all three sides, with ovolo and hollow moulded bressumers, and are supported by keeled brackets. The inner door has a similar doorcase with a scratch-moulded boarded door, retaining some original furniture. 20th-century paneled timber windows have replaced what were probably earlier bracketed oriel windows; a portion of one such window survives on the west gable end. Both gable ends of the main range are twice-jettied on moulded bressumers.
The hall ceiling is divided into nine square bays with chamfered and stopped beams, a dragon beam to the corner, and has exposed joists. A large inglenook fireplace has carved arcaded panelling and a relief coat-of-arms above. A carved 17th-century screen on the left side opens to the entrance lobby. The floor is a rare and well-preserved example of small pitched stones set in patterns, now protected from wear. The parlour, with six bays, has a similarly divided ceiling and later wainscotting and overmantel. A square open-well oak stair, with a moulded handrail and balusters, is located in the rear block; the handrail divides at the top to each flight, and there are built-in 17th-century cupboards. A separate stair in the rear lean-to provides direct access from the parlour to the cellar (buttery) below.
