Description

Llechwedd-y-garth is a Grade II listed house comprising a long range parallel to the slope with two forward wings offset to form a symmetrical composition at the left of the main range. The left-hand wing runs through to the rear as a cross-wing to the main range. The main range is double-pile between these wings and they are linked by an early 20th-century extension. The building is constructed of rubble stone throughout, rendered on the west side wall, with slate roofs of mostly old graded slate.

The rear range appears to have been built in at least two phases, evidenced by a discontinuous roofline, with possibly the earliest section that which is advanced to the right of the forward wings. This comprises a two-storey long single unit range with a lobby entry against a gable-end stack. The doorway sits within a lean-to open-work timber porch (possibly the work of Clough Williams-Ellis) and features a nailed timber door with strap hinges. There are two-light windows on each floor to the left. The first floor has a gothick arched light, though a timber lintel of an earlier opening is visible above. Below this is a simpler two-light casement with a rough stone voussoir head. The continuation of this range has a higher hipped roof.

The two forward wings display matched detail in their gable ends, comprising small-paned casement windows with gothick traceried heads (detail renewed in the left-hand wing) on each of three floors. Stacks are positioned on the inner corner of each gable with further axial stacks within each wing. The wings are linked by a two-storey timber-framed addition by Clough Williams-Ellis comprising six bays of timber framing with leaded light windows and glazed central doors to the ground floor, accessed by a stepped terrace enriched with timber balusters with acorn finials. Fine lead rainwater goods associated with this work are dated 1907 with the initials H and B.G. The return elevation of the right-hand wing to the east also has gothick casement windows of 18th-century character and a doorway with a similar head.

The west side elevation carried a plaque recording the restoration of the building by H and B.S. Gough in 1907. Its detail is largely of 19th-century character, comprising small-paned sash windows. The rear of the range includes some blocked detail of earlier windows in the central section, and in the earliest section to the east, a small two-light timber mullioned window with a stone hood mould.

The lobby entrance against the fireplace in the east end of the main range contains substantial ceiling beams of late 16th or early 17th-century type with half-round mouldings and chamfered joists. Square panelled framing appears in an incomplete partition wall. A heavy bressumer spans the fireplace, which retains spit-roasting equipment. The layout in the continuation of this range has been altered and little detail is visible in the west wing, though an axial fireplace here also features a heavy bressumer. The east forward wing retains early detail largely of 17th-century character, including a staircase (possibly not in situ, its layout modified or extended by Clough Williams-Ellis) with turned balusters, moulded rail and fluted newels with large acorn finials. A timber-framed partition is exposed in the sitting room, which has a corner fireplace with a panelled overmantel dated 1661 with the initials T over H.H. Ceiling beams feature half-round chamfers. Two ogee arched doorways into this wing and into the drawing room that runs between the two wings are probably 18th century.
