Description

The School House is a mid-19th century school and schoolmaster’s house, built in 1863 and with a later addition in 1872. It was established at the initiative of the Third Earl of Powis, who provided the site; the local parishioners constructed the building. The school closed in 1946.

The building comprises a single-story school room to the right and a two-story, gabled cross-range forming the schoolmaster’s house to the left. It is constructed of brick with a slate roof, and has axial and rear wall stacks. The schoolmaster's house features a doorway in its re-entrant angle and wood mullioned and transomed windows of two and three lights with flat arched gauged brick heads in the gable end, finished with fretted bargeboards. The school room has three-by-three-light wood transomed windows, and similar windows in the gable end and rear wing, which also houses the entrance. All windows are fitted with lattice glazing. The building represents a good example of a small rural school of the Victorian era.
