Description

The Severn Arms Hotel is a three-storey building dating from the 19th century, designed in an H-plan layout. It features a two-storey projecting porch and a long two-storey range that adjoins on the left side, providing a covered way to the stable yard. The main elevations are characterized by gabled fronts with decorative pierced bargeboards and a fine set of original small-paned, iron-framed windows. The lower windows have hooped-top glazing bars and flat heads beneath hood moulds, while the upper windows feature arched heads and intersecting tracery. There are two projecting stacks on each side of the main block, with rendered brick uppers, and a tall rendered stack serving the former coach house to the left of the covered way. A chamfered stone arch opens to the porch, which leads to a door for the former Assembly Rooms in the left-hand block, complete with a small-paned overlight and hood mould. The rear of the building has two flat-roofed modern extensions.

Surrounding the hotel is a cobbled yard with good quality attached ranges of stables, coach houses, and other outbuildings. These structures are built of rubble stone, painted on the yard side, with dressed quoins and arched window heads, topped with slate or tin roofs. They feature small-paned, iron-framed windows with tracery heads, well-crafted boarded doors, and chamfered door frames, although some openings have been blocked. The stables retain their original stalling and cobbled floor.

While there have been some alterations and modernizations, much of the period detailing remains intact, including four-panel doors, dog-leg stairs with turned newels and stick balusters, and exposed beams and joists.
