Description
Plas-newydd, formerly a vicarage, is a house designed in an H plan, featuring a main range and two cross-wings. It has a nearly symmetrical front elevation with two gables facing south. The house is two storeys high, constructed from axe-dressed slate with larger stones at the corners. The garden elevation to the east is painted white, while the front elevation is stuccoed and also painted white. The roofs are slate with tile ridges, and the chimneys are rendered, with one having been altered to brick.
On the front elevation, there are 12-pane sash windows located above and below in each gable wall, as well as another in a centrally placed through-eaves dormer. A timber porch with a lean-to roof is positioned between the advancing wings.
The garden elevation shows the flank of the east cross-wing, which corresponds to the two reception rooms. It features 12-pane sash windows above and below on the left side, with the upper window located in a through-eaves dormer. There is a similar window above a bay window on the right, along with an additional upper six-pane sash window in between. This wing includes a mid-chimney and a rear gable chimney.
The irregular rear elevation faces the stable yard and includes a single light upper window in the gable of the east cross-wing, along with two other upper windows and two lower windows. There is also a door within a rear porch and a disused wash-house to the right. The west elevation is also irregular, featuring two upper sash windows and three lower windows with mullions, as well as a lateral chimney to the right with a brick stack.
At the rear of the porch, there is a glazed screen with boxed shutters. Inside, the layout consists of reception rooms on the garden side in the east cross-wing and service rooms in the west cross-wing. The two main rooms have panelled doors and window shutters. A corridor leads from the front door, returning to the left towards the service area. The stairs are located off the main corridor near the front of the house, including stairs that descend to the cellar. A rear door from the foot of the stairs to the west cross-wing has been closed, and a second staircase for servants off the kitchen in the west cross-wing has not survived.
