Description
The Former Saw Mill and Farm Buildings at Severnleigh date from the 19th century and are arranged in an H-plan, oriented east-west, consisting of two pairs of end-to-end ranges linked by a short range. The main farm yard is located on the west side. The buildings are constructed of brick with slate roofs, although the roofs of the link and southwest ranges have been replaced with corrugated asbestos cement.
The northwest range includes an engine shed and hay store, featuring a basement storey that served as the saw mill. This basement is accessed from the west gable end, which has two segmental-headed openings and a bullseye opening in the gable. In the yard, there are four openings to the basement, each with tooled stone lintels at yard level. To the left at the west end is the traction engine shed, which has full-height boarded doors. The hay store has four blind round-headed windows with breathers, and the window to the right has been altered by a modern doorway under a concrete lintel. Centrally located is a doorway with a flattened elliptical head and a boarded stable door, alongside a segmental-headed casement to the left. Above this doorway are four loft openings with boarded doors, supported by timber lintels on the left and right, while the central two have flattened elliptical heads. The central link range and southwest wing, both used as cow houses, are lower and feature stable doors and mid-hung casement windows under flattened elliptical heads. An additional cow house is located on the east side of the link range, and there are projections at the angle between the link and southwest ranges that contain milking machinery, both of which are from the 20th century. The eastern ranges are taller than the western ones and also have stable doors and boarded loft openings.
Inside the saw mill, much of the original structure remains intact. In the northeast corner, there is a capstan for valve control of the turbine, which is situated in a pit against the north wall, next to a long workbench with a circular saw. The saw mill features exposed cross-beams supported by two cast iron piers, and in the southeast corner, there is a tunnel-vaulted recess. The northwest range has a king-post roof with raking struts, while the southwest and link ranges have similar roofs but with modern concrete floors and mangers. The other ranges have not been entered.
