Description
The Old Vicarage is a house, likely dating to the 18th century, built of grey sandstone rubble with a stone slate roof. The original design was of one storey, but the front has been raised to two storeys over three bays. The entrance is through a lean-to stone porch situated between the second and third bays, opposite the main chimney stack. A further external chimney stack is located on the south gable. A 20th-century extension has been added to the north end, providing access through a separate door. The windows are modern, double-glazed units with concrete lintels; some upper windows slightly project through the eaves, and the roof has been raised with a shallow pitch. The roofline slopes down at the rear, where an external chimney stack is positioned.
The building’s interior reveals evidence of a cruck-framed structure, with four cruck pairs defining a central, open-hall of one bay. A parlour is situated at the south end, and service areas occupy the north bay. The parlour features double axial ovolo moulded beams, with the earlier staircase located in a flanking position. The current staircase is now situated in the kitchen bay at the north end. The second cruck truss is a full cruck design, spanning 6 metres; it has tie beams and two collars secured with lap-trenched and half-dovetailed joints on the north side. The cruck timbers are vertically butted and tenoned at the apex, supporting a halved circular timber set flat.
