Description
Hillcrest and Beechview, formerly known as Tank Cottages, are a pair of single-storey cottages built in the early 1850s for estate workers. They were constructed during the time when John Naylor, a Liverpool banker, was developing the Leighton Estate, which included notable buildings like Leighton Hall and a church, all designed by W.H. Gee and completed by the mid-1850s. Naylor continued to enhance the estate until his death in 1889, during which several dwellings were added, reflecting a hierarchy of status among the buildings, with more prominent stone lodges compared to the simpler brick cottages for laborers. In 1931, Naylor's grandson, Captain J.M. Naylor, sold Leighton Hall and the estate.
The cottages are made of brick and feature rusticated stone quoins and a plinth band. They have a hipped slate roof with brick stacks located at the back. The entrances are located in the end walls, and the cottages are double-fronted with 12-pane sash windows set in dressed stone surrounds. Each cottage has a two-window front with similar windows on the end walls. The rear walls also contain sash windows with stone lintels and sills, overlooking walled gardens. The end wall and the garden at the rear have modern doors.
