Description
The Automobile Palace is a two-storey, nine-bay Art Deco building featuring a curving front, notable for possibly being the earliest use of faience facing in Wales. It has a flat roof and displays twenty-two seated lions along with shields on a plain parapet, which is topped with an egg and dart moulded cornice, although this has been removed from the left bays. The façade includes paired rusticated pilasters between the bays and twin glazed shop fronts on the first floor with arched heads. There is an overall cill band adorned with egg and dart moulding, and the letter fascia is mostly obscured by a modern sign.
While the ground floor has been partly altered, it still retains the original doors to the showroom, which feature sinuous handrails. The nine-bay elevation is set into the slope of Princes Avenue and includes a pedimented entrance to "No 2 Garage" at the first floor level, with original lettering visible on the pediments and ground floor fascia. There is also a two-bay return elevation facing the Western Promenade.
On the Princes Street side, the building has Art Nouveau ironwork railings. It is said to retain some of the earliest petrol tanks in Wales located below the forecourt, complete with pumps.
