Description
The Church of St. Cynllo is a Grade II listed building featuring a long, low nave and chancel, a north transept, and a lean-to vestry. It has a broad three-storey battlemented west tower and a gabled south porch. The structure is built of coursed rubble with freestone copings and has slate roofs that display a decorative crosswork pattern in grey and blue. The windows are primarily paired lancets with drip moulds, while a single lancet from the 13th century remains in the north wall. The south door to the chancel is set under a pointed arch, and there is a re-set coat of arms on the east wall of the chancel.
Inside, the church features a tall pointed chancel arch with engaged columns and transept arcading with moulded capitals. The roof is designed in the style of the 15th century, showcasing alternating tie-beam and open arch-braced trusses, with the principals resting on elaborately moulded timber corbels. There are three tiers of cusped windbraces. A re-set 15th-century doorway leads to the tower, which houses three bells: one from 1614 and two from 1869. Additional interior features include an aumbry, a trefoil-headed piscina, and double sedilia. The chancel floor is adorned with re-used medieval tiles. The font, pews, pulpit, and lectern are all contemporary with the rebuilding and feature trefoil and quatrefoil decoration. At the west end, there are four monuments, including one from the 18th century with an open pediment dedicated to the sons of James Meyrick of Pen-y-Clawdd.
