Description

Cilgwrgan is a building featuring a main range with a later cross wing and a contemporary storeyed porch located at the angle of the two ranges. It is constructed with a box frame, artificial slate roofs, and brick stacks. The main range is one and a half storeys high, designed with a two-unit plan, and the entrance is located in the later porch, which backs onto the stack. The framing is regularly square panelled, although it has been rebuilt in rubble at the rear and gable end. The building includes 20th-century windows, including wide gabled dormers. The cross wing is close studded, featuring mid rails on each storey and passing braces at the lower angles, with lateral and rear-wall stacks. The storeyed gabled porch is similarly constructed, though the left-hand return has been rebuilt in brick. Both the porch and the cross wing have moulded gable bressumers and close studded details in the gable apexes. The porch doorway has been renewed in an earlier opening, while the fenestration of the porch and cross wing is consistently 19th century, featuring 9-pane sashes in wide architraves on the front elevation and tripartite 20-pane sash windows on the return elevation of the wing. There is also a contemporary outshut against the rear elevation. A later brick range at the rear runs parallel with the main range, featuring a slate-hung gable end and largely renewed fenestration from the 20th century.

Inside, the former hall of the circa 1600 range has two deeply chamfered spine beams with ogee stops. The two reception rooms in the cross wing display Regency features, including panelled doors and moulded cornices, which reflect 19th-century remodelling, likely contemporary with the sash windows.
