Description

The Old Rectory is a two-storey house, built in the 19th century and serving as the residence for the rector. It faces south towards the churchyard with a two-window front elevation, although the main entrance is on the west side. A full-height wing extends to the rear, and a single-storey service wing projects to the east. The exterior is constructed of roughly axe-dressed slate, with the front rendered and rusticated, and the west side slate-hung. All stonework and the rendered facade are painted cream. The roof is low-pitched and slate-covered, with projecting eaves. A stone chimney rises from the front apex; another extends laterally from the east side of the rear wing; and a third, possibly truncated, sits at the gable end of the service wing.

The front elevation features two flat-roofed bay windows with canted sides, each containing horned sash windows; the front sashes of the left bay are divided by single glazing bars, while the sashes of the front and sides of the right bay are subdivided into small panes with simple Gothic tracery, partially made of metal. At the first storey, two four-pane horned sash windows are set within stone sills. Between these windows is an inverted-T shaped recess in the stonework, which may have been intended as a stylized Gothic arrow slit or a location for a sundial.

Inside, the house is organised around an east-west rear corridor, leading to two reception rooms to the south. Stairs and a former rector’s study at a mezzanine level are located on the north side of the corridor. A service wing, with its own separate entrance from the front, is situated at the east end. The reception rooms contain 19th-century iron fireplaces, adorned with decorative tiling.
