Description
The Old Rectory is a large, attractive two-storey house built in red brickwork with a regular stretcher bond, indicating an advanced use of cavity construction, and featuring Tudor details. It has slate roofs with four gables on the north and south sides, and generous overhangs at the eaves and verges. The roof includes an east-west spine range that connects all four north/south ranges.
The house was enlarged in 1851, resulting in a unique blend of symmetry and asymmetry in the front elevation facing the lawn to the south. The upper windows in the three left bays are 12-pane hornless sash windows, likely from the earlier part of the house. The upper window in the right bay and the lower windows of all four bays showcase an innovative 19th-century design with mullions and transoms, featuring lower sashes beneath fixed upper lights. There is a door in the second bay from the left, also beneath a transom and overlight. All window and door openings have segmental arches, chamfered arches and jambs, and brick label moulds. A string course may be present at mid-height, though it is concealed by ivy, similar to the side and rear elevations.
The main entrance to the house is now located on the east side, where there are two gables with 19th-century mullion, transom, and sash windows. Below, there is an open-fronted porch with a plain door.
The north elevation features the same gables from the four north/south ranges as seen on the south side. It has horned 12-pane sash windows above and cross windows below, except for the lower window on the left, which has a mullion, transom, and sashes, and the lower window on the right, which is a sash window similar to those above.
The three west bays are arranged in a quasi-symmetrical layout with a narrow hall and stairs enclosure. The staircase is of a simple Regency style, featuring inch-square balusters on a closed string and a plain handrail, along with panelled doors and door casings.
