Description

Cwm-dirgel is a cottage that features a timber frame and is weather-boarded, topped with an oversailed slate roof. The south gable is made of stone and has a brick chimney stack. The cottage is built on a stone revetted platform and is two stories high with two bays, offset to the left, and has a door at the south end. Some original windows remain, designed as small paned casements, with the upper floor windows being smaller, all having timber architrave surrounds and cills. There is a timber porch at the south with three steps leading up to it. The south gable is roughcast and has a lean-to extension. The rear (east) elevation contains two windows. To the north end, a collapsed barn has exposed the end timber frame of the house, which includes brick panel infill, and reveals the original steeply pitched roof truss featuring collar and tie-beam trusses with king struts and single purlins.

Inside, the cottage has a two-unit layout with a lobby entrance that leads to the fireplace on the south wall. The fireplace has been partly or largely rebuilt in brick and is now lined out and obscured. There are dog-leg stairs in the northwest corner. A timber-framed stud partition separates the service end, which is divided into two smaller rooms. The floor is made of stone flags, although part of it has been replaced at the service end. The first floor is divided into two rooms, with a cast iron fireplace located in the south room. The south lean-to contains a cast iron boiler.
