Description

Hurdley Farm is a two-storey, two-unit house dating from the 17th century, featuring a byre and a single-storey gabled wing at the rear. The building is constructed of random rubble with a slate roof. At the front, there is a doorway to the left of centre, accompanied by a small-paned casement window immediately beside it. Similar windows are found to the right and above. The rear of the house has a shallow outshut made of random rubble with two recently replaced windows. To the left, there are two windows beneath the wall plate on either side of the rear wing. This single-storey wing has random rubble walls, a slate roof, and an end brick stack, with a large oven butting against the exterior of the gable. The wing features replaced windows and a door on the west side.

In the byre to the left, part of the timber framing is visible within the random rubble wall. The upper storey has two large openings beneath the wall plate, with a smaller opening to the right. In the lower storey, there is a doorway to the left framed in timber, and an inserted doorway to the right framed in brick. The west gable extends to the south and north sides, featuring two two-light windows in the upper storey and a single boarded opening in the lower storey. The rear wall of the byre reveals part of the timber framing and a full cruck. The upper storey has a single six-light window beneath the wall plate, while the lower storey contains a ledged and battened door to the right in a timber frame. There is a doorway built against a cruck blade with a timber lintel and jamb, and to the left of the cruck, there is an inserted door in a brick surround. A random rubble wall projects from the north side between the house and the byre.

The building was not accessible at the time of inspection in March 1996, but it is said to contain two cruck trusses, one of which has a 17th-century chimney placed directly against it, along with a 17th-century timber-framed dais partition and part of a timber-framed passage partition.
