Description

Ivy House is a two-storey house built of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring a steep slate roof that is hipped at the west end. The roof has deep eaves supported by heavily carved large modillions. There are red brick chimneys located on the ridge and at the east end of the building. The house includes a cellar and an attic, and it has a raised brick band.

The Church Bank elevation consists of four bays, with three bays on the left and one on the right. This elevation slopes down towards the street on the left side and has a high rendered plinth on the right. The right bay features a blind first-floor window above a canted oriel shop window with 4-16-4 iron small panes, a fascia, and a cornice. The left three bays contain 12-pane sash windows above two doors and a central 12-pane sash window. The right door has stone steps leading up to a semi-circular 19th-century door with two glass panels, which is sheltered by a flat timber hood with a single iron rail. The left doorway has a modern part-glazed door with a three-pane overlight, which is situated under a curved hood supported by horizontal console brackets.

The right end of the house, facing Bishop's Castle Street, has a high rendered base and a large ground floor shop window. A raised band runs around this elevation, and there is a 16-pane sash window under the eaves. The basement features a ledged cellar door on the left and a fixed 2-light window on the right, both with cambered heads. The casing of the shop window extends down to ground level, with panels beneath a window that has eight large panes framed by piers with big console brackets, a fascia, and a cornice.

The interior follows a lobby entry plan. The west room has an encased cross-axial beam and an altered fireplace on the east wall. The room to the left of the entry has a chamfered beam with ogee stops and an oak beam over a partition leading to a small room at the east end. Enclosed stairs are located to the south of the main chimney.
