Description
The Checkers Hotel is an inn built with painted roughcast and features a roof made of old small slates, flat eaves, and brick end stacks. It stands two storeys tall and has three bays. The front facade includes three horned 16-pane large sash windows above, which are flush with the wall, and a pair of narrow 4-pane horned sash windows on either side, also flush with the wall. The central doorway is flanked by pilasters, a fascia, and a cornice supported by shaped brackets, and it features a six-panel door.
At the rear, the roof slopes down to the right over a later addition. There is a long northeast rear wing, with the west wall constructed of painted brick and the east wall made of stone, featuring brick dentilled eaves and brick quoins. The north end addition is made of painted brick and includes a pair of small-pane casements on the ground floor. The west side has two first-floor triple casements with overlights and iron opening lights, along with a modern flat-roofed addition.
In front of the building, there are stone setts. Inside, the front right room has an axial beam and joists, which have been opened into the rear room. The left room has also been opened out and features two covered axial beams. The rear wall on the first floor displays exposed timber-framed panels. There is 17th-century style wood panelling on the south passage wall, and the roof includes windbraces.
