Description

Great Cefn-y-berrin is a timber-framed building that has been rendered at the front and features a slate roof. It is one storey high with an attic and consists of five bays along with a cross wing. The entrance to the cross passage is located against the wing, while there is a rear lobby entry opposite the main stack. The framing is only visible on the rear (north) side, where there is close studding three panels high. The bay posts are carved with staff mouldings that develop into rounded capitals, supported by cut curved brackets beneath chamfered and cut-stopped jettied eaves. The wing is clad in 20th-century brick at the rear, and there is a glazed porch over the rear entrance, along with various 20th-century windows. A large rendered multi-flue star-shaped stack is also present.

Inside, there is a three-bay hall featuring cut stopped chamfered ceiling beams. A later partition now separates the main cross passage from the third bay against the wing. The stack includes a chamfered deep fire beam and splayed reveals, which are partly filled and conceal an oven. The parlour, located at the eastern end beyond the stack and now serving as the kitchen, has a triple roll-moulded ceiling beam with large ovolo and roll sides. There is an added lateral stack on the front wall with a strongly cambered fire lintel. A dog-leg stair in the northeast corner of the wing has shaped splat balusters. The upper floor features jowled posts with mortices for corner braces, and there are two well-preserved 18th-century six-panelled doors. The roof is of the double purlin type, and some 17th-century panelling can also be found.
