Description
Tan-y-graig Farmhouse is a group of buildings that includes a farmhouse, a barn, and an open-fronted shed, all aligned together. The structures are built with uncoursed local slate masonry, painted white, and feature restored roofs at three different levels with non-random slates. There is an end-chimney located on the left (west) side of the house.
The front elevation of the house is divided into two sections, with a door positioned near the left corner. The dormers, which have catslide roofs, are not perfectly aligned with the windows below, and they feature UPVC window frames. The lower windows are of 19th-century small-pane style, with timber mullions, iron glazing bars, and iron security bars. The left side has a door leading to an open porch made of stone side walls and a slate hood. There is also a small window in the left gable end at the back of the main fireplace, which is glazed but now blocked internally.
At the rear, the house has been extended with a modern flat-roofed wing and an informal side porch.
The agricultural range includes a three-bay barn that has a wide doorway on the left side, adjacent to the farmhouse, a wide central doorway with boulders serving as informal steps, and a small shuttered window on the right. To the right, there is a simple open-fronted cartshed. The rear of the agricultural range features a small upper light and two slit windows.
The house resembles the common lobby-entrance type, but the door is slightly to the right to accommodate winding stairs next to the chimney. Inside, there are two stop-chamfered beams over the main room on the left, and a timber-framed partition separates the units. The unit on the right has a lower floor level.
The barn features three bays and is supported by well-formed cruck trusses that include ties, collars, and yokes. The purlins and rafters have been restored.
