Description
4-8 Lower Canal Road is a two-storey, asymmetric terrace located in Newtown. The buildings at Nos 4, 5, and 8 each have one window, while Nos 6 and 7 feature symmetric fronts with two windows. The terrace is constructed of English garden wall bond brick, which is painted on the front, and has a gently pitched slate roof with a saw-toothed eaves cornice. There are brick stacks and two-light casement windows located below the eaves on the first floor, with broader two-light small paned casement windows on the ground floor. The windows have cambered header arches and plain reveals.
Later 19th-century timber porches adorn the front, featuring gabled roofs covered in fishscale slate, along with bargeboards and finials, and panelled sides. Nos 5, 7, and 8 have later brick plinths. The doors for Nos 4 and 5 date from the 19th century. The upper portions of the end elevations are slate hung, and there is a cross wing at the rear of No 5. The rear of No 4 includes a yard that encloses a wash-house and latrines, with contemporary but modern windows.
