Description

Bryn-y-Grog Hall is a distinguished building in a restrained Neoclassical style, constructed from red brick in Flemish bond with rubbed brick voussoirs and stone dressings, topped with a hipped slate roof and brick chimneys. The exterior features stone cornices, dentilled cornices on the wings, a sill band, and a plinth. The symmetrical front elevation showcases a three-storey, three-window central section flanked by two-storey bowed wings. A central porch is supported by paired monolithic Tuscan columns, leading to a pedimented doorcase with sidelights and a traceried fanlight. The original windows include 15-pane sashes in the wings and 9- and 12-pane sashes in the main block. The left return has a central pedimented brick feature that slightly projects forward, with a blind arched and square-headed opening flanked by similar blind openings and one sash window. The right return has replaced windows, while the rear elevation shows alterations on the left side, and to the right, there is a large stone pilastered opening with steps leading up from the garden.

Inside, the ground floor retains a largely intact plan-form, featuring a two-storey oval galleried entrance hall with a cantilevered staircase, slender balusters, and a wreathed handrail. The hall is adorned with a Lincrusta or similar swagged frieze and a central ribbed ceiling rose. The ground floor rooms generally preserve their Neoclassical fire-surrounds and friezes, with some rooms featuring six-panel mahogany doors. The former dining room boasts a rich foliage frieze and a Gothic revival style fireplace. However, in many areas, the plasterwork and sections of the ceiling have been removed. The upper floors were not accessible during the 1996 survey.
