Description

The Old Rectory is a restrained early 19th-century villa. It is constructed of brownish brick in Flemish bond and features a hipped slate roof with wide boarded eaves and brick chimneys. The building has a low stone plinth at the garden front and consists of two storeys with a single storey wing at the rear.

The entrance elevation is symmetrical, showcasing a central polygonal bay that includes a central entrance and a blind window above. On either side, there are 12-pane sash windows, with one 15-pane sash window on each side per floor. All windows are fitted with stone sills. To the right, there is an altered or added block that connects to a lower L-shaped service range.

The garden front is also symmetrical, featuring four 12-pane sash windows on the first floor and four 15-pane sash windows on the ground floor, which extend down to a paved terrace that runs along the front of the house. To the left, there is a projecting single storey wing with a hipped roof and wide boarded eaves, which has a large tripartite sash window extending down to floor level facing the garden. A greenhouse is located at the angle between the wing and the service block.

An inspection of the service block and greenhouse could not be made during the 1996 survey. The house appears to retain much of its original layout, including a staircase of early 19th-century character, an almost complete set of 6-panel oak doors, simple Neoclassical style cast-iron fire surrounds, and panelled shutters, all featuring original fittings. The library includes a marble fireplace with foliated brackets.
