Description

The stable block at Wynnstay Hall is a symmetrical, two-storey building with seven bays, originally constructed as Smith stables. The main western elevation is made of sandstone ashlar and features quoins and a string course at the first-floor level, topped by a renewed slate roof. The central three bays project forward and are pedimented, with a bell-cupola and weather vane above. The original openings have modern small-paned glazing; the ground floor windows have Gibbs surrounds, while the upper storey windows feature deep architraves.

On the left side, there is a nine-bay return elevation with a central carriage arch that has been partially infilled with a modern door, and it has similar window surrounds. To the far left, there is a two-storey, three-bay extension built between 1845 and 1847, which includes further rusticated quoins and Gibbs surrounds at the ground floor, along with a projecting string course at the first-floor level. The right-hand return elevation also has five bays and similar detailing.

The rear elevation is one and a half storeys tall with nine bays and a full-length moulded stone string course. The central entrance bay is pedimented and rises to the full height of the building, with a carriage arch that has a Gibbs surround and a carved console keystone detail. This leads to a recessed porch that encloses three doorways. There are two single-bay end blocks symmetrically placed, each containing doorways set slightly back from the main facade. Most windows are sash style with similar surrounds. The internal courtyard has altered red brick elevations, and while the interiors have also been substantially modified, the clock tower workings date from the 19th century.
