Description
The chapel at Wynnstay Hall is a private chapel designed in the Italian Renaissance style. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar, brick, and plaster, topped with a slate roof featuring red ridge tiles. An iron crucifix finial is located at the right end, while a decorative iron finial is at the other end. The chapel consists of five bays, which are divided by pilasters that are paired at each end. It has a moulded cornice and a parapet. Each bay contains a 2-light window of the Italianate biforate type, and there is an entrance in the left end bay, which is topped by an overlight of a similar design. The right-hand return wall is roughly plastered between the pilasters, and a low vestry, lit by a round window with quatrefoil tracery, is attached. The rear elevation, which is flanked by existing buildings from the 18th century, features an entrance and a 2-light mullioned window with arched heads.
To the left and rear of the chapel are estate buildings from the 18th century that retain some original external features.
Inside, the nave and north aisle have a barrel vault roof with moulded plaster ribs. The aisle arcade appears to be 18th-century work, supported by two later square-section columns.
Furnishings include several items from the 18th century, such as a pedimented Corinthian aedecule used as a reredos and a door with a shouldered architrave in the north wall of the aisle. Some walls feature an oak panelled dado that may date to the late 17th century. The doors to the vestry display the Williams-Wynn arms and the date 1877 painted on them.
