Description

The Groves is a 2-storey brick building from the 17th century, featuring an attic and a rear wing. It is constructed in English Garden Wall bond with a brick plinth and two dentil string courses on the front and left-hand return elevation, while the right-hand return elevation is rendered. The roof is a replaced slate, and there is a central brick chimney. The front elevation is nearly symmetrical, with a door and a window above that are slightly off-centre. Each side has one window per floor, with cambered brick arched openings typical of the 19th century that break through the dentil string courses. The door is a studded plank and batten design from the late 16th century, featuring applied fillets, a concealed arched secondary opening, and strap hinges and other fittings that may also date to the 16th century. The right-hand return elevation includes brick buttresses and an extension to the rear, along with a window in the attic gable. The left-hand return elevation has windows under cambered brick arches at the attic and ground floor, with an offset window at the first floor. The rear wing is partially timber-framed with brick nogging.

Inside, the entrance lobby has a chimney breast ahead and a door leading off to the left. The room to the left features an ovolo moulded principal ceiling beam, a fireplace with moulded stone jambs from the 16th century and a replaced lintel, flanked by doors made from likely 16th-century panelling with strap hinges. The room to the right has a replaced fireplace and door. At the rear, there is a 17th-century staircase that rises through three storeys, showcasing closed string, shaped splat balusters, a heavy moulded handrail, newels with facetted pyramidal finials, and a handrail made from reused timber with guilloche mouldings on the top floor. Some timber framing is visible in the walls, and the front rooms on the second floor are said to have stone fireplaces similar to the one on the ground floor, concealed behind plasterboard partitions. Several plank and latch doors remain on the upper floors.
