Description
Moreton below Farmhouse, also known as Lower Moreton Farm, is a two-storey building constructed from red brick, slate, render, and sandstone rubble, featuring an irregular plan. The front elevation, dating from the 19th century, is symmetrical with a central porch and a chimney at each end, along with altered 19th-century windows. The right-hand return has a rendered gable, a porch with a 19th-century door, a late 19th-century extension, and to the right of this, there is a door, window, dormer, and external stack, all of which are later additions. A large brick stack rises left of the centre of the range. The rear elevation is made of sandstone rubble with red brick, and the left-hand return includes extensions from the 19th century and later.
Inside, the front room features a heavy chamfered and stopped transverse bridging beam, with secondary beams that are also chamfered and stopped. There is an 18th-century stone fireplace with a cambered bressummer. The rear room has a heavy chamfered and stopped obverse beam, and exposed timber framing in roughly square panels can be seen in the rear and side walls. The doors are generally simple panel or plank doors, with some featuring H-shaped hinges. The staircase is located in the extension to the side from the 19th century. The upper floor was not fully accessible at the time of inspection.
