Description

Ysgoldy Brynhyfryd is a building from the 19th century featuring rough tooled ashlared sandstone walls and a slate roof that is hipped to the south and gabled to the north. It has a conical metal ventilator and brick stacks. The structure is quite striking, with a chapel located on the upper (2nd) floor, an added northwest schoolroom wing at the same level, and two back-to-back houses that occupy the two lower floors, built into sloping ground. The steep gradient allows for direct access from the road to both the ground floor dwellings and the chapel on the second floor.

The east elevation, which faces the road, is three stories high and has a three-window range. It features an off-centre gablet beneath the chimney, with widely spaced tall 8-pane windows that have cross-form timber mullions and narrow marginal panes on the upper floor. There is a sash window on the first floor and a sash window along with a door on the ground floor. The south elevation is also three stories high with a two-window range, showcasing 6-pane windows with cross-form timber mullions on the upper floor, sash windows (12-pane with horns) on the first floor, and sash windows (16-pane without horns) along with twin doorways on the ground floor.

The north elevation is a single story with a three-window range, featuring triple round-headed vent openings at a high level, a name plaque beneath, and closely spaced small windows with cross-form timber mullions below. The entrance doorway has an architrave and a corniced parapet above, leading to a vestibule that connects to the chapel and schoolroom. The schoolroom has a one-story south elevation with three windows similar to those in the chapel, while the other walls are blank. The schoolroom roof is covered with heavy, thick slates.

Inside the chapel, the walls are plain, and there is a three-bay ceiling adorned with three plaster ceiling roses. The houses are currently unoccupied, and their interiors have not been inspected.
