Description

Lower Honkley Farmhouse is a timber-framed dwelling, largely rebuilt in stone and brick, dating back to the medieval period with later additions. It has a pitched slate roof and a cross-shaped plan, including a possible projecting porch to the south. The northern section of the building is brick and features a dentilated cornice, with a catslide roof over a projecting western bay. New hardwood doors and windows were installed around 1995.

Entering from the south, the single bay reveals an exposed wattle-and-daub partition wall set within a box-frame timber structure, now protected by a glazed frame. The central bay leads into a room with a lower floor on the east side, featuring a large open fire with stone side walls and a bevelled wooden lintel. To the north, small, sloping stone steps descend to another room with a stone fireplace. Throughout the house, original floor joists and heavily bevelled beams are exposed. The second floor demonstrates evidence of a three-bay cruck roof with a top brace and heavy timber side purlins. The middle cruck lacks infill above the top brace to maximize light and ventilation. Also present are wide floorboards and a dog-leg staircase.
