Description

This is a vernacular revival house, likely dating from the 18th century, built as a vicarage. It combines a hall and cross-wing plan, with a decorative use of materials. The house is primarily brick, with terracotta dressings and slate roofs that have a notable overhang. Brick chimneys are located on the main range’s axis and end walls, with a central chimney featuring diagonally-set shafts. It is two storeys high, consisting of a main range and two asymmetrical cross-wings. The upper storey is slightly set back, displaying blue-brick diaper-work on the front and side elevations. Decorative detail is limited to the apexes of the wing gables at the rear.

The main range has a doorway positioned alongside the lower wing on the left. It features an arched entrance with a hood mould and a vertically panelled door with leaded upper lights and fine strap hinges. A small two-light mullioned window sits alongside the door, followed by a three-tier window illuminating the stairwell. These windows are finished with terracotta, displaying wavy mouldings around the leaded lights. Similar terracotta detailing is found on the lower windows throughout the house, with the exception of those in the left-hand service wing. The right-hand wing features a two-light lower window and a painted timber casement above. This casement has a projecting moulded frame supported by brackets and leaded lights, a detail repeated on all upper windows. The lower service wing is more simply detailed, with triple casement windows set within steeply arched brick heads on the ground floor, with matching windows directly above. Its return elevation has single- and three-light casement windows and a doorway leading to a small, enclosed yard with a pyramid-roofed outbuilding. The return elevation of the right-hand wing displays one- and two-light lower windows with a single light above, and three-light windows on each floor to the rear. The rear of the main range features paired two-light windows on each floor, as well as a doorway to the left of the service wing and a four-light casement window above.

The rooms are planned with the principal rooms facing the garden to the rear. A stair hall runs axially at the front of the main range, and a former study is located at the front of the right-hand wing. The left-hand service wing originally housed the kitchen on the ground floor and a bathroom above. The entrance lobby is panelled, with inner glazed doors positioned beneath the staircase, which runs along the front wall. Much of the original detail remains, including nearly all the fireplaces, although some are now blocked. These fireplaces display a hierarchy of detail reflecting the room’s function, with the most elaborate fireplace in the former sitting room, featuring a mirrored overmantel and decorative tiles flanking an ornate cast-iron grate. Delicate six-panelled doors and other original joinery detail are present throughout, including fine-moulded skirting boards.
