Description
This is a substantial gentry farmhouse, likely dating from the 18th century. It is constructed from sandstone rubble with a slate roof, and features a brick end wall and axial stacks. The main range is long and two-storied, facing the farmyard, while the garden front presents a symmetrical appearance with advanced hipped roof wings at either end. The east wing, and the corresponding eastern bay of the entrance front, were originally separately roofed at a lower height, indicating a former attached labourer’s cottage.
The entrance front is symmetrical, with a central entrance within a flat-roofed porch, a replacement built in 1964 for an earlier gabled porch. Flanking this are 12-pane sash windows with flat ashlar lintels, accompanied by smaller 6-pane lights on each floor. The right-hand bay was raised and re-windowed in 1964, during which earlier 6-pane sashes were replaced with the present 12-pane windows.
The garden front has a two-window range between the advanced wings. The right-hand wing (the former labourer’s cottage) has 12-pane sash windows on each floor. The left-hand wing retains the original pattern of 12 and 16-pane sashes, as does the main range between the wings. French doors now occupy the position of an earlier 20-pane sash window in the main range. The return of the right-hand wing includes a ground-floor lean-to extension and a timber-gabled porch in the centre.
While the exterior is sympathetic to its Georgian origins, much of the interior detail dates from 20th-century renovations.
