Description

The barn at Gellilyfdy is a large structure built from coursed rubble stone sitting on boulder footings, topped with a slate roof, although part of the roof has been replaced with galvanised sheets. On the eastern side, there is a central threshing bay featuring a doorway with a 19th-century dressed stone lintel and jambs that have been partially renewed in brick. To the right of this doorway, there are two tiers of three narrow vents. To the left, a similar arrangement of vents is interrupted by an inserted doorway that has been widened from a 19th-century doorway, which has a brick segmental head. Next to this doorway is a metal-framed window with a brick surround and wooden lintel, along with a single vent remaining at the left end.

The northern gable end displays stepped vents arranged in four tiers of 4:3:2:1, although the lower tier is interrupted by an added brick lean-to on the left side, leaving only two vents visible. The western side, which faces the house, mirrors the eastern side. Its threshing bay features a 19th-century stone lintel and dressed stone jambs on the left side, retaining double boarded doors. To the left, there are two tiers of three vents, while the right side has an added blockwork lean-to. The southern gable end is similar to the northern side, also featuring stepped tiers of vents, but the lower tier has been replaced in the mid-20th century by an inserted door on the left and two windows, one of which was originally a doorway.

Inside, the roof consists of five bays supported by queen posts and raking struts. One of the tie beams features a carved date inscription along with the initials WJ.
