Description

Glynne Cottage is a large brick and timber-framed house built in the Victorian Tudor style, featuring two storeys and an H plan layout. The medium-pitched tiled roof is adorned with brick chimneys that have simple, moulded stone caps, including a central set of diagonally arranged triple chimneys. The ground floor is constructed of red brick with a projecting plinth topped with chamfered stone. The first floor showcases decorative timber-framing, highlighted by an ornately carved wooden string-course depicting birds and foliage.

The gables on the left and right are advanced and feature intricately carved barge-boards and a string-course with zoomorphic interlace. The left gable includes lozenge-framing and a wooden 6-light mullioned and transomed window, which is stopped and chamfered, complete with a moulded hood and cill brackets. The right gable has off-set quatrefoil framing and a similar window. To the left of the center, there is a pointed-arched, chamfered entrance that contains a recessed 6-panel door with a decorative iron handle. Above this entrance is a cross-window beneath a small gable with barge-boards. The central section features zebra framing and two additional cross-windows on the first floor, spaced evenly to the right. There is a large 12-light window to the right of the entrance and a canted bay with 6 and 2 lights on the ground floor of the left gable. The right gable has 8-light cross windows and a 12-light bay on its eastern return.

The northern front has gabled cross wings on the left and right, featuring similar detailing. A large square tower projects outward to the right, with decorative framing on the first floor. This tower has a helm roof with a north-facing gablet and a decorative weathervane. The entrance is off-set and features a shouldered and chamfered head.

Adjoining the cottage to the west is a coach house that has been modernised as a garage.

Inside, the cottage boasts contemporary pine joinery throughout, including panelled, chamfered doors. The well staircase is adorned with highly-carved foliate scroll-work and ball finials on the chamfered and stopped newel posts. The main ground-floor rooms feature ornately carved stone fireplaces, which include zoomorphic detail in the spandrels and Gothic glazed tiles.
