Adjacent Malting Tower at Castle Hill Farm

The Adjacent Malting Tower at Castle Hill Farm is a stone-built triple-pile structure dating from the mid-19th century. It features two storeys on the left, one storey in the middle, and one storey on the right, with plain gables and slate roofs. The south facade, which serves as the entrance, is asymmetrical and made of brick, with a central single-storey brick projection. The entrance is flush with a cambered head and a six-panelled door. To the left, there is a 12-pane recessed sash window with a cambered head and a stone cill. The building has two brick chimneys with simple dentilated and moulded caps, a modern French window on the ground floor to the left, and a six-pane tripartite casement window on the first floor. There is also a 12-pane casement window to the left and a modern window to the right. The left gable, which is two-storey, features plain boarded double doors and a 16-pane cross-window above. The central gable has a four-pane cross window, and the furthest gable has a pair of boarded double doors with a four-pane fan-light.

To the right and adjoining the main structure is a partly rebuilt cellar hoist housing that contains the original winch mechanism and loading doors. This area is open and constructed of brick on a stone plinth. Beneath this and the adjoining brewery range are four large brick-vaulted cellars. The Malting Tower, which is adjacent to the Brewery and was formerly attached to the east, is three storeys high. The ground floor features an open barrel vault, while the first floor has entrances on the east, south, and west faces, with the eastern entrance equipped with a hoist. There are plane ventilation openings on the second floor, and the tower has a gabled roof with a ventilation dormer on the east side. On the west side, occupying a third of the top storey, there is a large cast iron, rivetted water tank that is partly external. Inside the tower, the remains of a large furnace can be found. The eastern face of the tower has recently undergone significant rebuilding.
