Description
The former Head Master's House at Hawarden High School is a large, asymmetrical 2-storey brick building that was established under the Welsh Intermediate Act of 1889 and opened in 1898 as part of the Hawarden County School, designed by Grayson and Ould of Liverpool and built by W. and T. Bailey of Hawarden at a cost of £2,450.
The building features a steeply-pitched tile roof with stacks on both the left and right sides, which have moulded necking. The left bay is advanced and includes a timber-framed gable with plain barge-boards. The central entrance is marked by a moulded round-headed arch, leading to a part-glazed door with a decorative fanlight. To the right, there is a single-storey canted bay with an 8-light leaded window and a shallow tiled roof. A dentilated string course runs along the façade, and there is a similar 8-light window in the ground floor left bay. The first floor has 2 and 3 light windows, and there is a 3-light flat-roofed dormer in the attic. A decorative rainwater head is located to the right of the gablet, along with another dormer on the southwest face. Additionally, there is a stepped lateral chimney.
At the rear, there is a contemporary single-storey storage range.
