Description
The Former Westlake's Brewery is a tall, five-storey tower brewery, flanked by lower offices and ancillary ranges. The large scale of the main block allowed for a capacity of 24 quarters. It is constructed from local stone with red brick dressings, which include quoins, band courses, and jambs, topped with a slate roof featuring an offset hipped clerestory. The third and fourth floors have segmental-headed windows with keystones, while the top floor features a band of eight square-headed windows and a doorway leading to outside stairs. The gable ends also have segmental-headed windows; the north end includes a Diocletian-type window with a central semicircular arch, and the south end is rendered. Most of the glazing consists of small-pane metal-frame windows.
At the north end, there is a two-storey office block with a hipped roof, distinguished from the main brewery by its use of freestone instead of brick dressings. This office block features a distinctive projecting bow window on the first floor, complete with a crenellated parapet, resembling a tourelle, and a bulls-eye window on the north side. Historical views of the brewery and evidence in the masonry indicate that the current gabled roof of the porch replaced the original Jacobethan design, which had a swept-up parapet and a pedimented doorcase. These views also reveal the loss of the former chimney at the south end and a smaller moulded chimney on the north gable; the clerestory once had ironwork cresting, and there was a hoist in the location of the present outside stairs. The building has not been inspected recently but is now converted for use as a plastics factory.
