Description

Castle Hill Farm is a three-storey brick house that dates back to the 1820s, with later modifications and extensions made in the mid-19th century. The southeast front, which originally served as the main entrance, features three symmetrical bays beneath a shallow-pitched slate roof with slightly overhanging eaves. The central entrance is recessed and includes a plain conservatory addition from the late 19th century, which has been mostly renewed. It has two-pane double doors topped by a plain rectangular skylight. On the ground floor, there are flanking canted wooden bay windows with eight panes each, both having flat roofs. The first and second floors have four-pane recessed sash windows, with the second-floor windows being narrower and positioned under the eaves. The windows are detailed with projecting stone cills and painted brick voussoirs.

The northwest facade, which faces the brewery yard, has an asymmetrical arrangement of windows featuring 12 and 16-pane recessed sashes on the first and second floors, with modern windows on the ground floor. This facade also has stone cills and rendered voussoirs. A central two-storey porch addition from the mid-19th century provides an entrance on the south side, featuring a chamfered design with a moulded and returned label, and a modern door. Inside, there is an original six-panel Regency door with the upper four panels being fielded, along with a 15-pane rectangular fan-light.

To the southwest, there are mid-19th century single-storey additions that are flush with the house, set behind a low brick wall and covered by a continuous slate roof. These include a modern window to the left, a 16-pane recessed sash window, a 12-pane recessed sash window, and a plain entrance with a cambered head.

Adjacent to these additions is a contemporary single-storey lodge or office with a shallow-pitched slate roof and decorative ridge tiles. It features a 16-light sash window on the south face and a recessed entrance on the west face with a cambered head and a plain boarded door, along with a plain shuttered window to the left.

To the south and west of the lodge, there are a pair of red brick gate piers topped with moulded yellow brick caps and stone hinge-blocks, leading to later gates. The southern gate originally served the house, while the western gate provides access to the brewery yard. Next to the right-hand gate pier of the southern gates is a garden wall approximately 100 feet long and 10 feet high, constructed of rubble on the south side and brick-faced on the north side.
