Description
The Game Larder, located to the west of Soughton Hall, is a tall octagonal structure dating from the 19th century. It features a swept slate pyramidal roof topped with a timber lantern that was originally used as a pigeon loft. The larder's sides are framed in timber with brick nogging, and it has timber piers at the corners. Between these piers are full-width, three-light wooden windows with transoms and iron glazing. The lower sections of the walls are filled with herring-bone brickwork. On the east side, there are double half-glazed entrance doors with an overlight above. The building stands on a high sandstone plinth that is supported by shouldered ventilation arches, and there are four stone steps leading up to the entrance doors.
Inside, the larder retains an inverted conical iron frame with hoops that hold hooks for hanging game.
